Level 1 Conclusions

Concerning Same-Sex Marriage

The church needs to be very careful whenever it considers the possibility that someone has sinned, or that a particular act is sinful. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23). God never calls us to condemn others, rather, He calls us to build each other up (I Thess. 5:11).

We cannot build someone up if we prevent them from having good things that they very much need. We also cannot build someone up if we encourage them to commit acts that are in fact sinful. Therefore, it is very important for the church to know for certain if same-sex marriage is good if we are going to give our approval of it. It is also essential that the church studies God’s Word carefully and comprehends it’s message accurately if we are going to tell people that same-sex erotic acts are in fact sinful.

Following a considerable amount of studying of Dr. James Brownson’s book, and discussion of it with pastors in the Reformed Church in America and the Christian Reformed Church, the following is the conclusion of same-sex marriage that currently stands. These pages are set up for the purpose of openly discussing this topic.

At present, the understanding of same-sex marriage that holds ground is that the following two passages from Scripture, taken in the understanding that initially comes across as their intended meaning, is the message of the Bible as a whole. These pages are open for input from all visitors. Those who believe same-sex marriage is acceptable to God are invited to submit their critique of these pages and to submit additional material to be included.

Leviticus 18:22

You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomina- tion. (ESV)

I Corinthians 6:9-10

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. (ESV)

These passages carry the meaning that a male is not to have sexual intercourse with another male and that those who practice such acts are sinning before God and as such are separated from Him.
