John 17 Does Not Demand Unity

Statement Against Unity Requires Us To Agree To Disagree

John 17

Christ does teach us in this chapter that unity among Christians is very important to maintain. However, unity is not the only matter Christians must take into consideration. As an example, if a member of one’s fellowship was teaching that Christ was in fact not divine, that He was a good teacher but no more, it would not be appropriate to insist on retaining unity with that person. In addition to confessional matters such as the deity of Christ, the school of thought that categorizes all theological topics into the categories of confessional, moral, wisdom and adiaphora holds that moral matters are also non-negotiable.
